X2 and XENPAK Series

The X2 and XENPAK series covers ten published titles: X2 SR, X2 LR, X2 1310nm 40km, X2 ER, X2 ZR, XENPAK SR, XENPAK LR, XENPAK 1310nm 40km, XENPAK ER and XENPAK ZR. All ten are listed here at series level. Their names are published, but no performance figures have been published for them on this site, and none are invented here. A name is not a specification, and this site does not treat it as one.

X2 and XENPAK are early 10G form factors, older than both XFP and SFP+. They appear in equipment installed when 10G was new: core routers, early aggregation switches and transport platforms that have run for years and are still in service. For an operator maintaining that equipment, the format question is settled by the slot, not by preference. An X2 slot takes an X2 module, a XENPAK slot takes a XENPAK module, and neither takes an XFP or SFP+ module. The value of this series is therefore simple: it keeps legacy 10G equipment running.

The variant names inside the series follow the familiar pattern of short-reach, long-reach, extended-reach and extra-long-reach options, with one title carrying a 1310nm 40km designation in each format family. Those names describe the family position of each title, but they do not state a verified reach, wavelength or fiber type for that title, and this site does not convert a name into a specification. A buyer who needs figures for a title in this series should state the title by name and the link it will serve during the inquiry, so the answer can come from the published specification document for that title.

Planning a legacy replacement deserves care beyond the module itself. The fiber plant, the patch panels and the equipment at the other end of the link all need to match the replacement module, and a site that has run for years may have plant records that no longer match reality. Before ordering a legacy replacement, confirm the slot format, the fiber type and the link length, and state them during the inquiry. That confirmation costs a message and saves a failed link.
