2.5G SFP Series

The 2.5G SFP series covers four published titles: 2.5G SFP, 2.5G BIDI SFP, 2.5G CWDM SFP and 2.5G DWDM SFP. All four are listed here at series level. Their names are published, but no performance figures have been published for them on this site, and none are invented here. A name is not a specification, and this site does not treat it as one.

A 2.5G module sits between the low-speed 155M family and the gigabit family, and it serves the links where 2.5G is the native speed: access aggregation, SDH and SONET tributaries at the higher tributary rates, and industrial networks where the traffic exceeds gigabit access but does not justify a 10G upgrade. The speed is specific rather than general, and a buyer who needs it usually knows exactly why: the equipment at each end runs at 2.5G, and the module must match.

The variant families inside the series follow the familiar pattern. The standard title serves ordinary duplex links. The bidirectional variant sends and receives over a single fiber strand, which halves the fiber needed. The wavelength-division variants allow several channels to share one fiber, which matters where fiber strands are scarce. Each of those jobs needs its own confirmation, because the variant name alone does not state the wavelength, the reach or the fiber type, and this site does not fill those gaps by assumption.

The 2.5G family is also a reminder that speed and reach are separate questions. Two links can run at the same speed and need entirely different optics, because one runs over multimode fiber inside a building and the other runs over single-mode fiber between sites. A buyer should state the fiber type and the link length alongside the speed during the inquiry, so the answer can be specific to the link rather than general to the speed.
